Michelle Obama: Hands Off Part I
Barack Obama says that information regarding his wife, Michelle LaVaughn Obama (nee Robinson), and children, Malia and Sasha, are: out of bounds, off-limits, hands off, etc. Since his pundits, minions, contributors, etc. have attacked Sarah Palin and her family; Ann Romney, and other female republicans, the Gloves Are Off. I have wondered why Barack has a double standard. Barack must believe that as long as he personally doesn’t do the name calling, no Republican can speak ill of his family. This is hypocrisy at its worst.
Michelle was raised by a stay-at-home mother until she entered Whitney M. Young High School. (1) This sounds a lot like Ann Romney, doesn’t it? Michelle’s family lived in a one bedroom apartment in the South Shore Community Area. (1)(2). I am not making any derogatory or inflammatory comments, but clearly one must reflect.
Whitney M. Moore High School was the first magnet school in Chicago, IL. Unfortunately, Michelle had a three hour round-trip commute to her high school. (1)(4)(5) Michelle attended this school with Santita Jackson (1)(5), daughter of Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. (born October 8, 1941) who is an African-American civil rights activist and Baptist minister.(4). Michelle graduated high school in 1981. (1)
Michelle followed her brother, Craig, to Princeton University graduating in 1985 with a BA Degree in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies. At Princeton, she challenged the teaching methodology for French because she felt that it should be more conversational. Her Master’s thesis was “Educated Blacks and the Black Community.” (1)
Michelle’s post graduate studies were at Harvard Law School from 1985-1989. While at Harvard she continued her black activism by participating in demonstrations advocating more minority students and the hiring of professors who were members of minorities. (1)(2)
Following law school, she was an associate at the Chicago office of the law firm Sidley Austin, where she first met her future husband. At the firm, she worked on marketing and intellectual property. She once requested that her then-fiancé meet her prospective boss, Valerie Jarrett, when considering her first career move.In 1991, she held public sector positions in the Chicago city government as an Assistant to the Mayor, and as Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. In 1993, she became Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, a non-profit organization encouraging young people to work on social issues in nonprofit groups and government agencies. (1) She continues to hold her law license, but as she no longer needs it for her work, it has been on a voluntary inactive status since 1993. (1)(2) Another theory, one that I find more plausible, is that the state bar was ready to pull or revoke her license. (3)
After dating for a couple of years, Michelle & Barack were married at Trinity United Church of Christ (6) on October 18, 1992. (2) This church was the church where Rev. Jeremiah Wright preached his hateful sermons against white people and the United States of America. Michelle Obama was responding to a spike in the attention paid to controversial remarks made by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his former pastor and, until shortly before the speech, a participant in his campaign.(7) Do we also remember Michelle’s preacher say “God damn America” This is what Michelle’s husband had to say about their minister:
“…we’ve heard my former pastor…use incendiary language to express views that have the potential not only to widen the racial divide, but views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation; that rightly offend white and black alike.
I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother — a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love. (7)
It appears that Michelle’s life has been one of anarchical activism for black civil rights. This was confirmed with the following comment “for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels that hope is finally making a comeback.”(8)
